Its Christmastime!!! I’m finally ready to pack up and head to my parents house this weekend to celebrate Christmas with my whole family. Brett and I flip flop every year spending the holidays with our families. This year we are spending it at my family’s house and I couldn’t be more excited! We are pretty traditional when it comes to celebrating Christmas. My mom decorates the whole house and the bulk of our time is spent doing all the Christmasy things at home. I love feeling like a little kid again and having an excuse to be in my pjs all day long! As we kick off the big weekend, I thought it would be fun to reminisce on my family’s traditions during Christmas.
We typically spend most of the holiday binge-watching movies and eating all the food. The Holiday, Home Alone, and Elf are all favorite Christmas movies in our household. I also love to watch It’s A Wonderful Life too because I often think we all have a little George Bailey in us at times but I love that reminder that the best gifts you have aren’t the presents under the tree but the people around it. I also love to bake cookies and make cocktails the whole weekend. Nothing makes me happier than being in that moment.
When we were kids on Christmas Eve night we would go to mass and head home to eat something simple like homemade subs or pizza. Before going to bed we would leave out milk, cookies, and carrots for the santa and his reindeer. My sister and I used to wear matching pajamas and sleep in the same room in anticipation for the big day. It was a tradition for us girls and I remember not being able to sleep those younger years – even swearing I saw a glimpse of santa’s reindeer and sleigh out the window. Nowadays on Christmas Eve, we typically cook seafood for dinner. My dad usually makes a yummy crab soup and shrimp pasta with salad as a side. I’m really hoping we can all play a game on Christmas Eve this year before we eat to make it more fun. I just bought What Do You Meme?. Have you played?
I remember waking up super early when we were kids on Christmas morning (for some reason I remember it would still be dark outside). My sister and I would be the first to wake up everyone in their rooms. We would start with my brother and then go into our parents bedroom. My dad would always delay the process by taking a shower before we all went downstairs to see what santa brought us. It used to make me so mad haha. Eventually we would all be ready and head downstairs to open presents. Santa typically gave us our biggest present and stuffed our stockings with plenty of goodies.
Now that we’re all older we all wake up one by one and gather into the family room sipping on coffee and wishing one another a Merry Christmas. Once everyone is awake we start opening up presents that we gave each other. We typically let the dogs open theirs first as it always serves to be entertainment. After we finish opening presents we’ll all gather in the kitchen and tag team a big breakfast full of french toast or pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and english muffins. We spend most of Christmas relaxing around the house, watching movies, and going for a walks with the dogs. For dinner my dad always cooks a big tenderloin, green beans, and twice baked potatoes.
It is always such an awesome day and I can’t wait to do it all over again this weekend. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and enjoy your time with loved ones and family!
