Happy New Year! It’s that time of year to make a resolution or set new goals for the upcoming year. Maybe you want to exercise more, eat healthier, travel more, get a new job, be in the company of friends/family more often, or want to kick a bad habit. Perhaps you also have a few goals or milestones you want to hit this year. I love writing down goals I want to accomplish for the upcoming year. It makes them feel more real and tangible. I also find it helpful to write down how I plan on accomplishing those goals. Dreaming them up is one thing but putting them into action is the more challenging task.
I believe the best way to start a new resolution or goal is to have a positive mindset. This is my one wish for you and for me when it comes to getting what we want out of this year. I honestly think we have a better chance at getting what we want and just generally being happier people when we choose to think/act positively. Whether you want to get in shape or get a fancy new job, it all starts with what you believe you can achieve in your mind and what you do in your actions to make it a reality. Just try it even if it seems like your faking it at times. Sometimes you gotta ‘fake it till you make it’! Here are a few tips that will help you be more positive in getting what you want out of this year:
#1 Surround yourself with positive people and circumstances: Being around people or situations that suck the life out of you is not good. Avoid those people or situations as much as you can and try to find the ones that make you a better person.
#2 Contribute to the happiness and well-being of others: Instead of always getting caught up in your own selfish ways (hey, it happens to all of us) try to think about how you can help others in need of your positive light. Some days its not you that needs positivity it’s others that need it.
#3 Ignore negative thoughts: This one’s hard to do. If you think you can’t do something, you are probably right. So why not try to turn negative thoughts into positive ones? What if things go wrong? Well, look at it as a learning experience and move one. No one’s perfect but we can at least try to find the silver lining in most circumstances. Also, try to move on from the petty bs and think to yourself “is this really a big deal?” If no, then quickly move on from it.
#4 Have a positive outlet or two for yourself: Exercise and having a hobby (like this blog) have been positive outlets outside of my professional and personal life where I can escape and do something for myself. Try to find something productive (even if that means reading a book in piece and quiet) to do regularly that’s just for you. I’ve heard many people talk about meditation being a huge help. There is an app called Headspace that I’ve heard many people like and talk about when it comes to meditating daily.
#5 Start and end your day with a smile: Another hard one especially on a Monday morning but I find that giving my husband a kiss and a “have a great day!” goes a long way. Daily phone calls or texts filled with funny meems with a friend or family member always puts a smile on my face.
#6 Do more of what makes you happy: Once you realize all the things that make you happy do more of it or be around it more. When you see yourself enjoying something write it down so you can go back to it later on and do it again!
#7 Have fun: Life’s too short to take everything so seriously all the time. Another hard feat for me! But find the fun in anything you do and just laugh when you can…
If all else fails, get a dog. Haha but really dogs are the best.
Being positive won’t be easy all of the time. There will be moments this year that will make us feel like the world is against us. It is ok to feel sad or angry at times. I believe feeling every kind of emotion is good even though some of them just plain suck. All emotions, the good ones and the bad, come and they go but just know that everything will be ok if you let it.
Best wishes to you on kicking off an awesome 2018! You got this!
