TGIF! Ah I am so happy for the weekend to be here. It was one of those wacky weeks – right? With the awful shooting that took place on Sunday night to Tom Petty’s death to getting unexpected curve balls thrown at me at work – to put it not so lightly this week kinda sucked. All we can do is move forward and continue to hope for the best. Luckily I am headed home this weekend to spend time with family out in the country which means the fall bucket list continues on!
Are you as much of a kid at heart as I am when it comes to this time of year? I take fall and the holidays very seriously. The best way to get in the fall spirit is to decorate, bake at home and watch fall movies (When Harry Met Sally anyone?). Coming home to a cozy home filled with happy decorations to brighten up the spirit is the BEST feeling after a long day. When it comes to decorating in October, try to find decorations that will last through November into Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t buy Halloween decorations unless you have kiddos – in which case go all out! Since we don’t have kids yet I am sticking to neutral decor. Although I can’t wait to dress up my kids one day to re-live Halloween through their eyes! Here are 5 easy things you can do to update your home right now for fall:
#1 Incorporate Artificial Branches, Wreaths, and Garland: Michaels is one of my favorite places to go to pick up festive decor for GOOD prices. They are currently offering 50-60% off fall decor right now! You have to go before all the best goodies sell out.
The festive artificial branches, stems, bushes, etc shown with festive elements (like leaves, acorns, pine cones, pumpkins, etc) are nice because you can quite literally “stick” them anywhere and they add a fun touch to your place. We live in a small apartment so I placed some under our television display and on our coffee table. You could even put them on your consoles, fireplace, or kitchen tables. I love them because you can save them and re-use them year after year. Michaels tends to come out with similar pieces every year so you can keep adding to your collection.
Michael’s also has a lot of different color variations within these items. If you love neutrals like me stick to warm tones like green, cream, mustard yellow, brown, rusty orange, burgundy, and subtle hints of gold. These colors also look more “real” despite being artificial plants. If you like brighter oranges, reds, and yellows – Michael’s has a lot to offer within that color range too.

#2 Add a Little Pumpkin: This might seem obvious. I have yet to pick up real pumpkins although I am really into faded colored pumpkin colors right now. I also picked up a cute velvet pumpkin at Michael’s which I am SO loving. It adds nice texture to the overall display. You can place these anywhere it makes sense in your home just like the artificial stems and garland. I tend to decorate in rooms I spend the most time in so I can enjoy them. These pumpkins from Pottery Barn are great too.

#3 Burn Seasonal Candles: We also can’t forget all the pumpkin and cinnamon candles. I have mentioned before that I am OBSESSED with the NEST Fragrances Pumpkin Chai Candle – it smells SO amazing. I buy a new one every year. So basically you need to buy this candle immediately. You can thank me later. It is also available in a votive, a 3 wick, and a diffuser.

#4 Get Cozy with Blankets: I don’t have any pictures of mine above but I have finally pulled out our cuddly blankets since it is starting to get cooler out (although today is is supposed get up to 86!?). I love the texture of this faux fur one from Pottery Barn, this super soft one, or this classic knit. You can shop all of Potter Barn’s throws here.

#5 Cooking/Baking: Another fun thing to do to get in the festive mood is cook! I cook here and there throughout the year but I experiment the most with my cooking this time of year through the holiday. I am not one to splurge on cookware or bake ware for the season but I do get a lot of use out of my glassware bowl set. It has all the different sizes you need for all the prep work.
Last weekend I cooked some recipes and here is what I thought of each:
Maple Glazed Chicken and Sweet Potatoes: I made this last Saturday night and we thought it was pretty good as a meal to make every once in a while! It is a updated fall savory version of your standard chicken meal. The sauce is comparable to some sweeter Asian sauces (kind of like an orange chicken sauce but less thick) and I love sweet potatoes this time of year – so yummy when cooked just right! Read the full recipe here.
One-Pot Tomato and Basil Tortellini Soup: I was very surprised at how much Brett and I both loved this recipe! We made it on Sunday night last weekend. It was super easy to make and doesn’t take a lot of prep work. This soup is filled with simple ingredients but is still filled with a lot of good flavor. It is an ideal meal to make on Sunday nights as they make great leftovers throughout the week. Get the full recipe here:
Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Cookies: I am sucker for sweets especially cookies. These are delicious! It is just a standard snickerdoodle cookie with a touch of pumpkin, nutmeg, and cloves. The best part about this recipe is how much the soft chewiness lasts for days. This recipe made about 20 cookies so I’d recommend doubling up if you are baking for a larger group of people because we all know we can never have just 1 cookie…I also think the cookies taste better the second day as they are nice and chewy. You can view the recipe here.
