I’m taking you back to our first Hawaiian adventure to Le Perouse Bay. We had spent our first full day lounging by the pool trying to get acclimated with the time difference but by the time our second full day rolled around we were ready for some exploring! The weather was overcast our first few mornings there so we wanted to get some hiking in. I had looked up a few different trails and found that Le Perouse Bay is relatively close to Wailea (about 20 minutes) so we hopped in the car and headed on over.
The drive was relatively easy. We got a pretty early start so we found parking to be a cinch. I definitely recommend getting up early to do most hiking/outdoor activities in Maui to beat traffic and get good parking spots. There are two volcanoes in Maui: Haleakala and Puiu Kikui. Le Perouse Bay’s jagged rocky southern edge of the island represents the end of Haleakala. Right when you approach the entry way to the bay you will see hills upon hills of dark brown lava that has been dried out for many many years.
We hiked a little bit of the Hoapili Trail all the way to Kanaio Beach which has really nice views of the water. The initial part of the hike starts off easy with nice views of the water along the rocky beaches. After about a half mile you will start to slowly trek up along rocks/lava with pretty views of the mountains off in the distance. Once you reach Kanaio Beach (about 2 miles from the trail head) you’ll see great views of the water crashing into the jagged edges of the cliff side.
I would definitely recommend wearing real hiking boots on this hike as the rocks can be pretty sharp and slippery! This hike basically chewed apart my running shoes haha. Also expect this hike to take a while since walking through the trail of rocks can slow you down – not to mention it’s also pretty windy up there. You should also bring bug spray (they mostly bothered Brett and not me), water, and some snacks (we brought cashews). You also don’t get cell service out there so be prepared for that…Lastly, bring a camera to capture the moment and incredible experience that Le Perouse Bay has to offer!
